Goodbye Hot Girl Summer

Hot Girl Summer was a lot different this year. From the height of the pandemic limiting travel and thotivities-to protests and marches all over the world, this summer was not the norm. The idea of “normal” in 2020 has completely left the universe which has helped create new forms of virtual entertainment.

With accounts such as the Verzuz phenomenon that began in the early days of quarantine, more artists have taken to social media performing live shows from home. Questlove and DJ Nice also became fan favorites with dj sets for almost three months straight. These new times have introduced virtual award shows, festivals, and quarantine style music videos.

Now more than ever the music industry has found a way to adapt and keep us all entertained despite these strange times. In early August Cardi B released her first original release of 2020, “WAP” ft. Megan Thee Stallion. The song instantly became the perfect end of summer anthem despite critics claiming it was “too” explicit. This has been an ongoing argument in the past targeted specifically at female artists who use their lyrics to express their sexual freedom. In comparison to their male counterparts whose lyrics often do not receive such criticism this type of sexism is cringeworthy. Have we forgotten the OG female artists such as Mc Lyte, Foxy Brown, Lil Kim, and Trina? Or classic r&b faves like Adina Howard, Salt N’ Pepa, TLC, and SWV? Explicit lyrics to express sexual freedom is nothing new to Hip-Hop or R&B. To kick off the start of Thotumn here is a lengthy list of songs that would make those same critics clutch their pearls - an ode to Meg Thee Stallion and Cardi B.
